A New Political Party?

Presented by Community Activist John Hoff
Since neither the Democrat or Republican party politicians are listening to the voices, wishes, of “We the People†on the local and national levels, how about starting a new political party called “We the People†(WtPâ€)?
This can be done by having 700 registered voters sign a petition which has already been printed up by the State of Hawaii Elections Office. Once we obtain these 700 signatures we have a new State political party.
We will focus only on Kaua’i issues in the 2008 election by placing 4 to 5 candidates on the ballot for council. Maybe a House Rep or two as well. All WtP candidates will guarantee to vote Yes on all WtP issues such as stabilized homeowner property taxes (the Ohana Kaua’i amendment); affordable land for affordable housing; initiate bio-energy facility to lower electric cost; implement solid waste program to avoid new $25 million land fill; building moratorium; independent audit of County books/budget;Hawaiian issues; and many more items. Focus on 6 issues at a time and when one is solved, another is added to the list. We need to vote in a block for at least 4 new candidates, one of which will be Hawaiian, to control the Council & take back our government.

I love this idea! I think all of those issues are priority. A couple of issues to consider also would be enforcing our Vacation Rental Laws, No fly zones for commercial aircraft such as the big island has now, Reforming and replacing our current D.L.N.R. offices and officers, so that real agriculture assessment can be done. I estimate at least 80% of agriculture zoned properties would not pass an agriculture inspection from a Big Island officer. On the Big Island, every bannana tree is counted and taxed! I think that Kauai could benefit most from lessening our food imports, and relying on our own island’s fertile landscape.
John is offering an option for a leadership change on Kauai. It is well focused and measurable. It does not appear that an educated electorate is casting votes. The two major parties have become split due to the diverse nationalities of Kauai. This has allowed the nationality with the best voter turn out to seat or keep their candidate despite party.
With divisive issues like the Superferry, the voting culture can quickly change. Especially as more mainlanders become residents and bring their money to the election process. They will be focused on candidates making it easier for them to buy up and build on the land to deepen their financial pockets. What John is offering is a way for us to be successful or go down fighting instead of standing and watching, as our finite island is lost to greed.
