Do these people want to rent or own a home? What do people consider affordable housing? I would want to know. I'm sure there are many people like me who would like to help with the affordable housing problem, but we first need to know what people can afford.

Well you can blame your lack of affordable housing on the Mayor and his possee. They keep raising the taxes on the homeowner, so the rents have to keep climbing too. Imagine a studio apt for $400 per mo, never again.

I think that there should be more affordable housings on Kauai.
As a Full time college student my boyfriend [who is also a F/T college student] and I constantly look for a place to rent, but realistically, most of the places are just too high for our part time income.
We put in an application for Kalepa Village in Hanamaulu but the waiting list is so long there. The other affordable housing in Puhi is full, and their website said there would be none avaliable till October 2008. Thats a long wait! =O
Either KCC should build some DORM ROOMS for students, or we need more affordable housing. Especially Puhi-Kappa side.

The island of Kauai has laws that do not allow buildings to be too high. Of course hotels are exempt from this law. If housing is short, than go up, that is what the hotels did at least... I think this law protects the real estate market more than the public. Since the demand of housing makes their bank account larger, and since the advent of affordable housing, would surely drop the market boom which they all pray for.
