A New Political Party?

September 12th, 2007

Presented by Community Activist John Hoff

Since neither the Democrat or Republican party politicians are listening to the voices, wishes, of “We the People” on the local and national levels, how about starting a new political party called “We the People” (WtP”)?

This can be done by having 700 registered voters sign a petition which has already been printed up by the State of Hawaii Elections Office. Once we obtain these 700 signatures we have a new State political party.

We will focus only on Kaua’i issues in the 2008 election by placing 4 to 5 candidates on the ballot for council. Maybe a House Rep or two as well. All WtP candidates will guarantee to vote Yes on all WtP issues such as stabilized homeowner property taxes (the Ohana Kaua’i amendment); affordable land for affordable housing; initiate bio-energy facility to lower electric cost; implement solid waste program to avoid new $25 million land fill; building moratorium; independent audit of County books/budget;Hawaiian issues; and many more items. Focus on 6 issues at a time and when one is solved, another is added to the list. We need to vote in a block for at least 4 new candidates, one of which will be Hawaiian, to control the Council & take back our government.

Do you like the idea of starting a new political party called “We the People”?

Affordable Housing

September 2nd, 2007

Housing for many residents on KAUAI has become nearly unobtainable because of a hot real estate market that has skyrocketed property values beyond the means of most residents. The market has been anchored by repeat and high-priced property sales that have occurred over the last five years. Is there an affordable housing issue on Kauai? How should our elected officials be tackling this issue if it exists?

Poipu Sardine Can?

September 1st, 2007

Nearly a dozen construction projects are under way that will add 4,500 homes and apartments to Kauai’s south shore. The Kauai County Council failed to pass a resolution last year imposing a moratorium on new development. Some residents are turning out to air complaints about new projects and zoning changes. Developers are contributing money to help ease traffic congestion. Some residents are still wary of new construction and its impact on the community and the lifestyle that many desire.

Superferry, or Superscary?

September 1st, 2007

The Superferry classifies itself as “H-4”, linking the Hawaiian islands together like freeways. Via taxpayers, $40 million will be funded through reimbursable bonds issued by the Legislature for harbor upgrades throughout the state of Hawaii.

Many KAUAI residents feel the Superferry has been forced upon them, this is a place where you get to decide if that is the case. Some like the idea of a Superferry, others hate it.

Unnatural Selection? (GMO)

September 1st, 2007

Genetically Modified Organism (G.M.O.). This is a plant or animal that has been genetically engineered. Many industries support the development and use of GMOs while many consumers and organizations question their safety and have called for adequate and independent testing of GMO products.

Concerns for Kauai?: Multinational corporations that dominate the genetic engineering industry have made a home for themselves here on the Kauai. DuPont/Pioneer, Monsanto, Sygnenta and others have selected the state of Hawaii (and Kauai in particular) as the place to conduct some of their most experimental open-air field trials of genetically engineered crops. Some are concerned about the effects these introduced, novel species will have on our public health, our local agricultural economy, and our fragile environment.

It is apparent that some Kauai residents feel that GMO testing has been forced upon them. This is the place where you get to decide if that is the case.
